Sucrée mais amère, c’est ainsi que l’on pourrait qualifier l’histoire d’une industrie qui a alimenté la mondialisation depuis l’époque du commerce triangulaire atlantique, en passant par le Blocus continental de l’ère napoléonienne, jusqu’aux guerres néolibérales actuelles.
L’exposition collective Sucre de l’est à La Box tente d’esquisser un panorama kaléidoscopique et hybride à partir de plantations de canne à sucre sur d’anciennes îles sucrières, d’usines en ruine dans des zones dites post-socialistes, de champs de monocultures boostées, de piquets de grève et de ziggourats de cubes de sucre. La bataille menée par l’exploitation de la betterave occidentale contre celle de la canne à sucre des colonies, représentée par Honoré Daumier en 1838 dans les pages du magazine satirique Le Charivari, constitue le point de départ de cette recherche s’étendant sur plusieurs siècles. Les œuvres de l’exposition remettent en question les discordantes contentions de l’impérialisme, le « laissez faire » des majestueux, l’idéologie qui se cache derrière le commerce de la sueur du sucre.

Cette exposition est le fruit d’une collaboration internationale au sein du projet Eastern Sugar, initié par l’artiste Ilona Németh et co-financé par Europe Créative.

The bittersweet history of an industry which fueled globalisation from the time of the Atlantic trade triangle to the continental blockade of the Napoleonic era and right up to the modern-day neoliberal wars. The collective exhibition « Sucre de l’est » sketches out a hybrid kaleidoscopic panorama with the sugar cane plantations of the former sugar islands, factory ruins of the so called post-socialist zones, green fields of boosted monocultures, picket lines and ziggurats of sugar cubes. The battle of the bloated continental beet and the scrawny colonial cane depicted by Honoré Daumier in 1838 on the pages of the satirical magazine Le Charivari constitutes the starting point of this research stretching through centuries. The works in the exhibition challenge the discordant restraints of imperialism, the « laissez faire » of the mighty and the ideology behind the sweat of sugar. This exhibition is the result of an international collaboration with the Eastern Sugar project, by the artist Ilona Németh and co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.
